The Torridon
Set in the remote Scottish Highlands, The Torridon is a true retreat. The beauty of the surrounding mountains and lochs creates an atmosphere of pure tranquility. When I stayed here, the rain added a cozy, intimate vibe, and I couldn’t help but feel that time slowed down amidst the breathtaking views. With wood-burning fireplaces and cozy corners in the lounge, it’s the perfect place to curl up with a book or enjoy a craft cocktail by the fire. The hotel’s commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the Highlands is clear, and it’s a place where you can feel connected to the land. Whether you’re exploring the rugged wilderness or simply relaxing, The Torridon offers an experience that feels both luxurious and deeply rooted in nature. My advice, stay a day longer than you initially plan, you’ll get there and never want to leave!

My journey ended with a stay at the legendary Gleneagles Hotel, and it couldn’t have been a more fitting finale. Often referred to as a “glorious playground,” Gleneagles blends old-world elegance with a spirit of play and adventure. Set on 850 acres of sweeping countryside in Perthshire, the property offers something for everyone—from world-class golf to fly fishing, spa indulgence to horse riding. But what really surprised me was how much I personally enjoyed the gundog experience. Working with the dogs in such a hands-on, joyful way added an unexpected (and delightful!) layer to the stay.
The hotel itself is a masterclass in understated luxury, with beautifully appointed rooms, multiple dining options—including a two Michelin-starred restaurant—and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels effortlessly polished. Whether you’re sipping a cocktail in the American Bar or exploring the estate’s endless offerings, there’s a sense that anything is possible here. It’s a destination in its own right—and a must for travelers who want their time in Scotland to end on an unforgettable high note.

A visit to Edinburgh Castle is a must for anyone traveling to Scotland, but the value of a pre-opening tour cannot be overstated. This exclusive experience allows you to explore the castle before the crowds arrive, giving you time to really appreciate the grandeur of the fortress without the usual bustling crowds. During the summer months, when the castle is typically packed with visitors, this private access offers a rare opportunity to soak in the history and beauty of one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks. As you walk through the medieval halls and gaze at the Crown Jewels (all by yourself!), it’s easy to imagine life in Scotland centuries ago. The chance to explore this historic castle in peace, and with a knowledgeable guide, is an invaluable experience for any traveler.
Clava Cairns
For Outlander fans, Clava Cairns is a must-visit. These ancient burial cairns are thought to date back over 4,000 years, offering an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the people who once inhabited this land. The stones here are believed to have had some ritual or ceremonial significance, and they provide a mystical setting that feels suspended in time. Standing among these weathered stones, it’s easy to imagine Claire and Jamie Fraser stepping through the stones in their time-traveling escapades. (Unfortunately I was NOT transported back in time!) As you touch the stones, you can feel the connection to Scotland’s distant past, making it one of the most magical and historically rich sites in the country.
Cawdor Castle
Blending medieval charm with modern history, Cawdor Castle offers a truly unique experience. A still-active residence, the current Lady Cawdor calls this castle home, adding a personal touch to your visit. Though I visited before the gardens were in full bloom, you can only imagine how stunning they would be in the spring, surrounded by the castle’s stone walls. The history here is rich, and the experience of walking through its halls and gardens transports you back in time, especially when you consider the castle’s longstanding role in Scotland’s aristocracy. This working castle offers an incredible look into both the past and present of Scottish nobility.
Blackness Castle
Set dramatically on the shores of the Firth of Forth, Blackness Castle is one of those rare places where history and pop culture collide. Known to many as “The Ship That Never Sailed” due to its unique, ship-like shape, this 15th-century fortress was once a royal stronghold, a garrison, and even a prison. But today, it’s probably most recognizable to fans of Outlander—having served as a filming location for some of the series’ most intense scenes. (Ask me if you want to see the filming photos!)
Visiting Blackness offers a different perspective from Scotland’s more polished palaces. It’s a working castle, rugged and real, with stone staircases, weathered walls, and sweeping sea views that leave you breathless. Whether you're walking along the high ramparts or imagining the castle in its cinematic glory, there’s an immersive, atmospheric quality that lingers long after you leave.

Falconry with Elite Falconry
One of the most exhilarating experiences I had in Scotland was working with Elite Falconry. The instructor drove over four hours to meet us at The Torridon, where I had the privilege of interacting with River, a majestic 2-year-old White Tail Sea Eagle. But River wasn’t the only bird I had the chance to meet—there were several other magnificent birds of prey, each with their own fascinating history and personality. The hands-on, intimate experience allowed me to connect with nature in a way I’ll never forget. Falconry, with its ancient traditions and skilled birds, provides an unmatched sense of connection to the land and its wildlife, making it a must-do for any traveler seeking a truly unique experience. Without a doubt, one of the highlights of my entire trip—and a personal bucket list moment.
Wild Swimming & RIB Boat Ride on Loch Ness
If you’re looking for something more adventurous, wild swimming in Loch Ness is a thrilling—and invigorating—experience. The water is freezing, but the rush you get after plunging into its depths is worth it. (To be honest I almost bailed on it that morning, but lucky for me I was traveling with some supportive women who made me brave enough to stick with it!)
For those less inclined to take the plunge, a RIB boat ride across Loch Ness offers a unique perspective on the loch’s vastness and mystery. Standing at over 700 feet deep in some areas, Loch Ness is a place where legends and reality come together. Plus, the team at Aldourie Castle ensures you stay warm with dry robes and hot drinks, making the experience feel both wild and comfortable.
The Highlands
There’s something undeniably magical about the Scottish Highlands—a beauty that’s almost impossible to describe. The serene landscapes and majestic mountains offer a kind of peace that’s hard to find anywhere else. While the journey there may be a bit of a drive, the tranquility and raw beauty of the area make it more than worth it. Whether you’re hiking through the valleys or just taking in the view, the Highlands will leave you feeling deeply connected to nature.
