In the US, life can feel very go, go, go. We’re always bouncing from one thing to the next. Sometimes the hustle and bustle can get exhausting.
When I find myself feeling run down from the daily grind, I turn to the Caribbean. I’ve always loved the beach and being near the water, and I try to get down to the Caribbean at least once a year. There’s something so rejuvenating about sitting on the beach, listening to the waves roll in, reading a good book, and sipping a fruity drink. The sun on your skin, no obligations, nowhere to be. Total relaxation.
Each island has its own unique culture and draw, which is why I keep coming back. Even though I’ve visited the Caribbean many times, from romantic getaways with my husband to girls' trips and family vacations, there are always new places to discover.
What I love most is how living on island time forces you to slow down, take a deep breath, soak in the sunshine, and truly relax.
Grenada: The Spice Isle
Being so familiar with the Caribbean, I decided to venture a bit more off the beaten path on this trip and visit Grenada. This quieter island isn’t overrun by tourists, but still offers everything you want in a Caribbean escape: stunning beaches, lively towns, and incredibly friendly locals.
Known as the “Spice Isle”, Grenada grows spices all over the island. You’ll find nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, and ginger. You can book a spice tour to visit plantations, rainforests, and local gardens to learn about the spice trade.
And of course, like the rest of the Caribbean, you are never too far from good rum and chocolate, too. To enjoy the flavors of the island, explore St. George’s Saturday market. It’s the perfect place to try a wide mix of local products like fresh spices, jams, vanilla, and exotic produce.
Something I especially appreciate about Grenada is that the locals love the beach just as much as visitors do. It was so nice to see families enjoying their island home.

What To Do In Grenada
Hire a driver (the roads are narrow and can be tricky for visitors to navigate) and head to St George’s, the island’s main city. You’ll find shops, restaurants, and local culture. Look for handmade souvenirs and fair trade spices to bring a piece of Grenada home with you. From there, you can venture into the wilder parts of the island for hiking and exploring.
Indulge in local flavors
Try some local restaurants and enjoy fresh-caught fish. Be sure to try a local barbecue dish packed with flavor. After all, it is called the Spice Isle.
Grand Étang National Park
If you’re up for a longer drive, head north to explore the lush national park. Take a rainforest hike to a hidden waterfall and look for wildlife.
Insider Tip:The roads outside of St. George’s can be twisty. If you experience motion sickness, plan accordingly. There’s still plenty to see closer to the southern resorts, too.
Chocolate Tour
The north side of the island is also home to chocolate plantations, where you can join a bean-to-bar chocolate factory experience and see the process of how the chocolate is harvested. If you don’t have time to head north to the farms, visit House of Chocolate in town. This adorable shop gives a live demo of how chocolate is harvested and made on the island.
Rum Experience
Head to Clarke’s Court Rum Distillery for a tour and tasting. The tour takes you through the original equipment that processed the sugarcane back in the day. This equipment was discontinued in 1985 in favor of a modern process for making rum using imported molasses from Panama, but they still keep the old steam engine running for demonstrations. See the aging barrels and sample the product.
Fort Frederick
Wander through the historic fort overlooking the port. Built during the French and British struggle for control of Grenada, it is one of the best-preserved bastions in the Caribbean. It’s a great spot for those looking to better understand the history of Grenada.

Grenada FAQ
When is the best time to visit?
January through April offers the best weather. It would make a great escape during the dark days of February. Or for fewer crowds, reduced pricing, but still great weather, check out shoulder season in May or June
How long should I stay?
If you have the time, I recommend 7 to 10 days so you can fully relax without feeling rushed. A longer trip means you don’t have to compromise your beach lounging to go explore the island. That said, even a long weekend can be the perfect reset.
Do I need a visa to enter Grenada?
As of May 2026, US citizens do not need a visa to enter Grenada for tourism. Just grab your passport, suitcase, sunnies, and go!
Is Grenada safe?
Yes, Grenada is safe and very welcoming to tourists. The locals are friendly and enjoy the close proximity to the water just as much as the tourists.
